Is a cadet in the guard a very high position during the time period?
ReplyDelete-Michael Linnen
Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the weirdest stories i have ever read. Why should an untalented actor be supported by so many people and why should Roxane be named Roxane when her real name is Magdeline Robin in the play. This author really wanted to confuse his audience with the extensive list of characters and different positions and statures.
ReplyDelete-Michael Linnen
I truly believe that Cyrano's nose is his tragic flaw, in which he cannot be seen with his cousin "Roxane"

ReplyDeleteWhen I just looked at his picture up to the right, Cyrano reminded me of Michael Jackson (after the surgery) . . He is extremely talented, but is a little messed up in appearance. ---I feel like I've heard this recently. Did Ms. Hemann say this in class today?
ReplyDeleteCyrano confuses me. He gets mad at people when they stare at his nose, but then he has a million ways to make fun of it himself. So then I was thinking how funny he was. Then I keep reading and then he confesses his true feelings to Le Bret. So then I am feeling bad for him! I don't know how to feel about him! First he is cracking jokes, then he is sad again! He changes mood SO FAST!
ReplyDeleteCyrano de Bergirac is a very complex character. he has a quick temper to balance that monster of a nose he has. Cyrano de Bergirac thinks he is in charge of everything because he tried to control who could act in the play. he even kicked somone off the stage!
ReplyDelete-Andrew Suiter
Cyrano is overconfident in himself. he tries to fight 100 men. How more snobby can you get? How could someone as ugly as Cyrano fight 100 men? He could win if the men look at his nose though. They would die of laughter.
ReplyDelete-Michael Linnen
Cyrano is really ugly, however everyone likes him and he is well known. He loves his cousin, Roxane. This seems a little inappropriate and weird. Many men want to marry Roxane. Is anyone else a little disturbed?

ReplyDeleteI love Cyrano, even though he can be mean. You have to remember that everyone is probably staring at his nose when they talk to him. I would get upset too. Most people in the story do like him. I am VERY disturbed by Roxane's behavior.
ReplyDelete-Serena Zachary
Cyrano is a little weird and he does change his emotion a lot. I feel that he is to smart and clever. I also feel sorry for him because he was talking to Roxane and thinking that she loved him, but she doesn't. Also I think that It was brave of him to say that he would protect Christian. That was very brave and nice of him.
ReplyDeleteI felt so bad for Cyrano when Roxane said that she was in love with Christian. I don't get how she doesn't see how much Cyrano loves her. Isn't it a tad bit obvious? I hope that she figures out that she is really in love with Cyrano. I don't think that Christian will help out Cyrano. He feels untrustworthy to me.
ReplyDelete-Sophie Wanek
I just read the rest of Act II. I don't really understand why Christian would insult Cyrano about his nose if the cadets told him not to. Cyrano seems really ugly and scary and I would never want someone like that to hate me. I would probably end up getting into a sword fight and dying. Cyrano seems to have multiple personalities.
ReplyDelete- Erin Young
I agree with Erin. It doesn't make sense that Christian would constantly insult Cyrano's nose when he was told not to. He is just really lucky that Roxane likes him, otherwise he would be dead meat. I think it would be interesting to see Cyrano's reaction if he didn't know that Roxane liked Christian. I think that Christian would be dead if Roxane didn't like him. Although I do feel bad for Cyrano when he finds out that Roxane doesn't love him.
ReplyDeleteI find Cyrano's personality to be very odd and confusing. I also agree with Erin that he seems to have mulitple personalities. He gets mad when people talk about his huge nose but then still has ways to make fun of it himself. He also seems kind of short tempered.
ReplyDeleteMy first judgment of Cyrano was that he was insecure, but brave at the same time. He would challenge anyone to a duel if they dared to mention his nose, thus his insecurity about his nose. He would fight a hundred men in the streets alone, thus his bravery!
ReplyDelete-Brooke Walding
I do not understand Christian and Cyrano's plan. In the plan, Cyrano will give Christian eloquence and help him sound intelligent when talking to women. Christian will then make Cyrano handsome. How would this even work? They didn't have plastic surgery then. Cyrano sounds so hideous that he has no chance whatsoever at being handsome anyway. I don't want to say that Christian sounds stupid, but he doesn't sound very intelligent, so I don't know how he will learn how to talk to women.
ReplyDelete-Erin Young
Well i agree with Erin comment too. It would not be a good thing to be hated by Cyrano. I mean he fought off a hundred men in the first act, and Christian doesn't know this but Cyrano is also suppose to be protecting him. Cyrano has a lot of different emotions in this play. At first he is kind of mean then he goes to brave and then to sad. His emotions go everywhere.
ReplyDeleteHahaha Erin! I do agree with you though. The only way to make Cyrano handsome is to dress him differently or something. I'm surprised Cyrano is going to actually help Christian talk to women because you'd think since Cyrano loved Roxane and was so hurt that she loved Christian, Cyrano would want to make him sound dumb and low when talking to Roxane.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why Roxane is called Roxane when her actual name is Magdeline Robin, I don't see the connection. Also I think that Cyrano's bravery will end up getting him into trouble. I don't see what Cyrano's position on his large nose is. He gets mad when people stare at it yet when they say it is not big he gets mad at them and disagrees. He seems to be very short tempered.
ReplyDeleteI have a question. Why did Roxane call a meeting with Cyrano. The only reason that she called the meeting was to tell Cyrano that she was in love with Christian. I kind of feel bad for Cyrano who had his hopes up. He was thinking that Roxane was going to tell him that she loved him. The conversation with Roxane must have been very ackward for him, I wouldn't want to be in his position. What was Roxane's point in telling Cyrano that She loved Christian.
ReplyDeleteThis story is getting more confusing, but better as it drags on. It was rude of Christian to make fun of Cyrano's nose. It was also rude to interrupt his heroic story. I was bewildered that Cyrano did not retalliate to Christian's words. I also find Christian brave. This is because he just went up and insulted a man who fought 100 hundred men, the night before. Now that is crazy.
ReplyDelete-Mason Maher
Cyrano has many good qualities. He is witty and courageous. He is smart and is able to multi-task. He is also talented with a sword. But, Cyrano has 2 flaws. His first flaw is his rudeness. His second flaw and possibly the biggest is his nose. I am not sure, but I predicted the outcomes of the story. One of my predictions was that Cyrano's downfall could possibly be his nose.
ReplyDelete-Mason Maher
Cyrano de Bergirac is a very diverse character. I believe that Cyrano de Bergirac's downfall could be his entilty that he is the boss of everything, his arrogance, and his ENORMOUS NOSE! :)
ReplyDeleteCyrano de Bergerac is a very interesting character. At first he gets mad at people for making fun of his enormous nose. Then he makes fun of it himself, using many funny comparisins. Cyrano is so brave, yet he is also arrogant. He thought he could take on 100 men and he did, so you have to give him some credit.
ReplyDeleteI felt bad for Cyrano when Roxane told him she loved Christian. She called a meeting with him and told him things to get his hopes up before crushing them. I also don't see how Cyrano thought he had a chance with Roxane if he admits himself that he is ugly and has an enormous nose. He is also to brave for his own good. He thinks that he it tough and can take on anything, as the 100 men, but eventually he will run into someone or something that is tougher than him.

ReplyDeleteI think Cyrano is like a lovesick puppy. He is in love but isn't loved backed. I also believe this is why he is so mean to people. If he had someone to love him even with his big nose he'd probably be a lot nicer to everyone. These are just my thoughts on Cyrano so far.
ReplyDeleteAlex Hudson
I don't understand why Christian insulted Cyrano after they told him not to. It seemed pretty stupid of him to do considering how angry Cyrano usually gets when someone makes fun of him. I also don't understand how their plan will ever work. Christian doesn't seem smart enough to be able to pull it off.
ReplyDeleteI like Cyrano, because even though he loves Roxane, he still agrees to look out for Christian (the man she loves). I think that's a really selfless thing to do. that's how you know that he really loves her, and it's not just physical attraction. With true love, you will do anything in your power to help the one you love, even if it breaks your heart. The one thing I didn't understand was how is Cyrano going to become handsome, you can't teach someone to be attractive physically. And I agree that Christian is not naturally smart, and you can't fake that, so I don't think he'll be able to pull it off.
ReplyDelete-Serena Zachary
Maybe i missed something, but why did Cyrano make that deal with Christian? He gets nothing out of it while Christian get Roxane. I get why Cyrano agreed to protect agreed to protect him, but this is a little past that. Cyrano is just kind of a confusing character.
ReplyDelete- Paris
I have a question does anybody know of Cyrano knows that he has no authority, or does he know that he has no authority to tell people what to do and he blatnly ignores that?
ReplyDeleteCyrano is my favorite character because he is like me in the way he thinks he is in charge and invincible, like me.
ReplyDeleteYep suiter...
ReplyDeleteMy first impression of Cyrano wasa a good one. He pulled everything off that he tried in the most unconventional ways. He had complete authourity over the people in the play without having any of the authourity the Marquis would have. What also really impressed me was how humble he was. One would expect someone with so much sucess to be full of themselves. I can't really think of a famous person to compare him to...
Whats with Cyrano's feeling on his nose? He'll make a joke about it at one point but then turn around and pucnh a guy in the face if he makes a mention of it. He can't seem to make up his mind about his nose. He seems to change his feelings on it every other page.
ReplyDelete- James
I think Cyrano is a very brave man. It took courage to help Christian when Roxane loves Christian. I think one reason Cyrano was so mean at the play is because he isn't loved enough. Roxane doesn't love him so he is mean to others. I also think Roxane is blind. She doesn't think Cyrano likes her.
ReplyDeleteAct III is starting to shape an idea, again of what will happen later in the story. I think one of the men will go to war and not come back. That was why Roxane was worrying about Chrisitian so much. I also think that Cyrano will fail in protecting Christian. Moving on, De Guiche is obsessed with Roxane, but I don't understand why he wasn't very upset that Roxane married Christian. Although he was trying to be mean, in saying that Christian had to leave Roxane, the minute they got married.
ReplyDelete-Mason Maher
After reading Act III, I think Cyrano is even more intelligent than I thought he was earlier. It amazed me he was able to come up with seven different ways he would have been able to travel to the moon. Especially because he was on the spot. I know that I would never be able to do that. It's also surprising that Cyrano was able to speak to Roxane in Christian's voice and also able to tell her the feelings that Christian had for her. Maybe this was all because he felt the same way about Roxane.
ReplyDelete-Mason Maher
I originally didn't think that De Guiche was going to buy all of Cyrano's ideas of ways to get to the moon. I thought he would pull out his sword and threaten him to move.
ReplyDelete-Mason Maher
My favorite character is Cyrano. He is brave and smart. Even though, he isn't attractive, he is beautiful at speaking what he is thinking and what he feels.
ReplyDelete-Gabby Lanphier!
How did Roxane, really believe that Cyrano was Christian when Cyrano was talking to her by the balcony. I mean, how could someone not be able to tell the difference between two voices. It's not like they were far away from each other. From the picture in the book, it appeared that they were maybe 15 feet away from each other. Roxane is a fool for believing that Christian could speak the way that Cyrano was.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Grant because it doesn't make any sense that she couldn't tell the voices between the two of them. Especially because Christian started talking and then Cyrano did. She must be dumb. I think it is funny because all of these guys love her, but she can't even tell the voice of the one she claims to love. She just seems so STUPID!!!
ReplyDeleteIf i were Cyrano i would have not been able to stall De Guiche while the wedding was going on. He loved Roxane and he basically made sure that she got married. Also i don't even think that i would have been able to come up with so many ways to get to the moon. De Guiche was very mean by making them go to war. I don't like him at all! Roxane really is not the smartest person because she didn't know that Christian is a fake she should have known that it was Cyrano.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite character would have to be Cyrano because he is brave, smart, talented, and great with his words. If only he were attractive he would be a perfect character.
ReplyDelete-Brooke Walding
Okay i don't see how Roxane could have not known that Cryano was Christians voice. They must have different voices right. If Cyrano was talking she would have heard that the voice changed. I also think that Roxane and Christian shouldn't have got married so soon. They didn't know each other that long, but i guess that this is in the 1600s.
ReplyDeleteIt is funny how Cyrano says he loves Roxanne, but if you look at it they are completely opposite. Roxanne is kind of dumb because she says that Christian and her are to be married, but this doesn’t help the situation because Christian still has to leave. Plus she doesn’t even know the voice of the one she claims to love. On the other hand, Cyrano is brilliant. He came up with this amazing plan of how to distract De Guiche for fifteen minutes. His plan requires him to think on his feet, and he does so amazingly. I just don’t think they are meant to be but they do say opposites attract…
