After Act 2: Do you think the agreement between Cyrano and Christian is practical? What problems do you foresee in it? Why does Cyrano make this agreement with Christian? What will he gain? What is your impression of Roxanne after her conversation with Cyrano? Is she deserving of Cyrano's love? Explain.
During and after Act 3: Describe Cyrano's mixed feelings when he speaks to Roxane unseen. Why might be be both happy and sad? An idealist is someone who follows his or her beliefs beyond the point of practicality and who acts as if the world were better than it really is. From what you have seen of Cyrano so far, show how he is an idealist.
Do you think a love like Cyrano's is actually greater than a love like Christian's? Why or why not?

  1. I think the agreement between Cyrano and Christian is stupid. Christian gets all the benifits. Cryano gives out his lovely thoughts and poetry but gets nothing in return. Christian only has his face to work with and he still gets more out of the deal. What would happen if Roxanne wanted to take a walk with Christian in the day time? There would be no place for Cyrano to hide. It is a bad plan

  2. Roxane is really annoying. I understand that she is really pretty, but I don't like her personality. She tells Cyrano that he is just jealous of Christian when they are talking about the love letters. Cyrano wrote them, and if I were him, I would be mad at Roxane for saying that Christian was better at speaking to women. I just don't get why everyone likes her, because her personality is lacking.

  3. I can't believe that Christian thinks he can get away with using Cyrano so he can be more romantic. How wouldn't Roxane realize that Cyrano was the one speaking to her. Is Roxane stupid? You would think that if she was really in love with Christian she would be able to recognize his voice. I feel as though Roxane would realize that it was really Cyrano, they are cousins. There is a part of me that feels Roxane knows that Cyrano is really the one speaking to her, deep down.

  4. I think that the agreement is preposterous. Cyrano should've given her the letter even if she "loved" someone else. This is because reading what he wrote would make her start to think of him in a more then friends way and maybe eventually turn into deep affection. Now with the agreement he gets nothing out of it besides a even more broken heart. Cryano needs to do what he's good at to attract Roxane.

  5. Preposterous?

I think the agreement is practical. Without the agreement Christian would never be able to have Roxane because he is too awkward when he talks to her. On the other hand Cyrano would never even have a chance of talking to Roxane about love unless he does it through Christian. The agreement may be awkward but it was necessary. Obviously there is a major problem that arises. Christian cannot talk to Roxane for very long in person.

  6. Commenting on others

Alex I think Cyrano did the right thing in not giving Roxane the letter. It would have been extremely awkward and Roxane would not trust him at all in guarding Christian. It would have cut off their relationship completely.
Sophie, I think that Christians knows he won't get away with this. How could anyone possibly believe that? But, it doesn't matter if he gets away with it or not if he gets to marry her.

  7. Cyrano had mixed feeling when talking to Roxane for a couple of reasons. He was able to finally get his feelings out through his voice. But at the same time it wasn't his voice he was talking in the place of Christian and that must have broken his heart. It must have been especially painful in helping Christian get a kiss. I know that I would have never been able to do the same if I was in that place. Cyrano also tries his best to stop Christian and Roxane's relationship from going too far, but at the same time he helps it along.

  8. Cyrano is obviously an idealist. This is easy to see. He has every right to be one too. If I had that kind of talent and that kind of luck I would be the biggest idealist in the world. I think that part of Cyrano's success is due to his kind and selfless acts. The whole play is kind of like a model of karma. Cyrano is an idealist because he thinks he can get a girl to love him by talking through someone else. If this was any other person attempting this I would think it was impossible. He is also an idealist in his other acts including taking on 100 men.

  9. I do not think this aggreement is very practical bewtween Cyrano and Christian. Each of them has a chance to have a realationship with Roxane. If they work together like they have, she is only going to find out the truth and niether of them are going to have a chance. If I was Cyrano I would tell Roxane the truth. Cyrano needs to go after what he wants. He shouldn't help others if it is something he really doesn't believe in.

  10. I really don't think this agreement is practical. I understand now what Cyrano is trying to accomplish, but it only works if Cyrano is in Chritian's shadow every step of the way. I thought the part where Christian is trying to talk to Roxane pretty funny. He thought he would still be able to woo Roxane with out Cyrano's help, but he totaly crashed and burned with out him. That just shows that this deal may work for a little bit, but its all going to come crashing down soon.

  11. I think the agreement is practical. I feel like Cyrano has the opportunity to take advantage of Christian though. Christian sounds like he is full of himself and knows that he is "cute". That may just be a stereotype on my part for the fact that he might actually be smart. What I still don't understand is how Roxane is so blind. How does she not realize that her love is really for Cyrano? If she is unable to realize this, is it really "true love"?

  12. There is going to come a time when Cyrano can't write or "speak" for Christian and Roxane will be confused or heartbroken. Another thing that could happen is Cyrano will somehow be exposed and show to Roxane that Christian's "voice" is really his and Roxane may realize she's in love with Cyrano. That would probably make Christian very angry and try to hurt Cyrano.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Roxane is blind because she wants to be. She thinks that she loves Christian because she is physically attracted to him. She then reads the letter and even if it doesn't sound like Christian she'll believe it's him because she wants to. Also to love someone there has to be physical attraction but also emotional attraction. Cyrano is a master at words and getting girls to love him emotionally but no one can see past his physical appearance.

  14. The agreement between Cyrano and Christian is not fair to Roxane. She thinks she loves Christian for being handsome and able to eloquently speak to women. This version of Christian does not exist without help from Cyrano. Roxane is not in love with Christian, but Cyrano. This agreement cannot last forever, and Roxane needs to know the truth.

  15. i dont understand what de Guiche's plan was. Was it to marry him to Roxane or was it to marry Christian to Roxane? Is the Chapuchin a monk (at least i think so). And wouldn't an iron platform fall if the magnet would stop going up? I also beleive that Christian will die in the battles.

  16. I do not think the agreement between Cyrano and Christian is practical. They are being fake, and neither are being completely honest with Roxane. She is getting a false impression of Christian. This might be disastrous when Roxane figures everything out. She might feel betrayed and lied to. She does not know the real Christian, therefore, her love for him cannot be real either.

    :)

  17. I think the agreement between Christian and Cyrano is not a fair agreement. It is easy for Cyrano to make Christian sound smart, all he has to do is remain unseen. But I don't see how Christian will be able to make Cyrano handsome, so their agreement cannot work. I think that eventually Roxane will realize what is going on and she will then no longer love Christian or Cyrano. Their plan just has too many flaws and when Roxane finds out that the letters and speeches she thought was Christian was actually Cyrano the results will not be good.

  18. On Sophie's last comment-
I'm going to have to agree with alex. Roxane seems to be blinded by this first sight love that she had. At this point it seems to be lasting but I have a feeling that later on in the story that veil will be lifted and she will begin to question who is really talking to her. Sophie and you also suggest that Roxane will instantly fall in love with Cyrano. We know that she thinks of him as a best friend if not better to tell him secrets and trust him. Unfortunately friends don't usually end up in love.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that Christians love is greater than Cyrano's. This is probably a contraversial post but I have a few reasons to back it up. Christian's love must be stronger because he seems to have had little success in his past espcially in getting girls. If he had, he would definitely be more confident when talking to them. Cyrano on the other hand is able to express himself completely openly and has been surrounded by sucess so far in the story. Roxane might be just another trophy for Cyrano to capture.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think it was ironic how Christian ends up going to fight. I think Roxane will end up finding out the truth about Christian. She will then love Cyrano because of the sacrifices he made and the letters he wrote. I think friends can fall in love. Things usually end up Cyrano's way I've found out.

  21. The problem i forsee between Cyrano and Christians agreement is though they are going to try to form toghether, they are still two different people. I also think that Cyrano is going to get fed up with Christian getting the credit for his letters, and is going to blow the truth to Roxanne. I believe she then finds out Cyrano loves her, and then gets stuck deciding on what to od in this love triangle. I believe this is weird because usually Cyrano has control of the situation, but now Roxanne has controll. I will be very interested to see who Roxanne choose: Christian the handsome, yet not good with words soldier or her cousin Cyrano, very good with words, yet his looks (especially the nose =, is horrendous.

  22. I don't think that the agreement is practical. Just think about it they are working togther for a common goal, Roxane. The only problem is they both cant have her so one of them is just wasting their time... Unless they cut Roxane in half then they could each get her. That wouldn't work very well (she would die).

  23. This arrangement between Cyrano and Christian is not, in my opinion, defined by what the two of them can gain from one another. Christian and Cyrano seem to have separate aims, Christian's being very simple. He desires only the relationship with Roxane that Cyrano's letters provide- for Cyrano, this agreement could mean much more. Cyrano is deeply in love with Roxane, yet she favors someone else. Cyrano can not express his words to her himself, but he can observe their effect on Roxane through Christian. It seems to please Cyrano to hear how moved Roxane is by his words, words that come from Christian but are his nonetheless. So, I see this plan as a safe, skewed, and slightly cruel way for Cyrano to witness the power of his words and the passion they instill in Roxane.

  24. In act 3 I don't understand why Cyrano kept De Guiche away from the wedding. He could've "accidentally" let him by. He could've said that De Guiche was difficult to stop. I know he loves Roxanne and all but he is really starting to bug me with all his chivalry. He should be able to tell her that he likes her and he can't help her out with Christian. I really hope she finds out how vain she is, how stupid Christian is, and how wonderful Cyrano is. Even if Roxanne does learn all these things she would still be undeserving of Cyrano.

  25. Cyrano must really be in love with roxanne. He gave up the opportunity to ruin the relationship between Christian and Roxanne. Cyrano could have just let de Guiche go interrupt the wedding, but he didn't. He helped Roxanne find happiness with Christian. Cyrano also shows his creativeness in Act III. He makes up 7 different ways of getting to the moon (theoretically of course). This takes true brains, wits, and creativity.

  26. Annie, I agree with you about what Cyrano could have done, but that would have devastated Roxane. His love for her is stronger than Christian's, concerning more than possessive infatuation. He was considering what Roxane wanted, how his actions could benefit her; he cares about her, and wants to see her happy.

  27. I don't think the agreement is practical at all. I don't get how Cyrano will gain anything from this agreement. They also aren't being honest with Roxane. She will eventually have to find out that Christian isn't the one saying all those things. Cyrano must really love her if he keeps putting up with this, but I think he should tell her the truth because he deserves better than to be used by Christian.

  28. I don't understand what was going on with de Guiche. I get that he likes Roxane and thinks she's in love with him too, but why would he send her a letter saying she was to get married to another man? And why did Roxane ask de Guiche to keep Cyrano at home? I thought Christian was being sent to Arras. . . I'm confused.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The agreement is unfair to Cyrano. He does all the hard work but gets nothing in return. All Christian has to do is listen to Cyrano and Roxane will be his. I wonder why Cyrano would make a deal like this, when the only thing that he gets to do is see Roxane. Roxane is mean for making Cyrano be around her when she doesn't love him.

  30. Christian is an arrogant fool. He thought that he could possibly talk to roxanne. He epicly failed. Christian couldn't possibly think for himself if he didn't have a "crutch" with him at all times. All he could say was, "I love you" or "i adore you". How more failure can you get.

  31. I think that Roxane doesn't really know what she wants. She talks about how much she loves Christian and little does she know that she only loves his face. She really loves Cyrano, so she needs to stop being so shallow. I just don't like Roxane, she annoys me. I think it's sad that Cyrano loves Roxane but she doesn't love him back. He's so smart, but she doesn't like him because he has a giant nose.

  32. I strongly dislike Roxane. Her personality is kind of annoying. I don't see why everyone is in love with her because she seems rude and oblivious. How does she not see how Cyrano loves her? Even if she does end up liking Cyrano I don't think she deserves him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think the love Cyrano has is greater than the love Christian has. Cyrano loves Roxane so much. He just wants her to be happy. Christian is not showing Roxane his true self. Therefore, Roxane is in love with his fake personality. Cyrano is going out of his way to help Christian and Roxane.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Cyrano and Christian are doing more damage with their agreement than good. Many would expect Roxane to throw her affection upon Cyrano, should she discover the truth about Christian. I have difficulty seeing this. Roxane is being played with, having her love directed intentionally by Cyrano and Christian. How would she feel to learn that everything she knew about Christian was a lie? How conflicted would she be if Cyrano was revealed as the author of Christian's speeches. I would not expect her to fall for Cyrano at such a discovery. She would, instead, likely be shocked and disturbed to learn that the ballads over which she had poured her affection were written by her cousin, someone she knows as a brother; as family.

  35. Cyrano is clearly an idealist; he's taking this agreement between him and Christian way beyond what anyone else would do. He even lets them get married! He loves Roxane, and knows that she loves him back(at least his personaliy), and yet he still does what he can to make sure the wedding goes according to plan! Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a bad guy, in fact, right now he's probably one of the coolest character's I know, but his takes his ideas far beyond what anyone else would. Though in his case, it's probably not such a bad thing.

  36. Act 1 Comments-
I personally think that this idea is foolish. Christian is just going to hurt Roxane when she realizes that he isn't as loving and good with words as she thinks he is. Also, I think that Cyrano, being as smart as he is, should have thought of the consequences of doing this with Christian. But,the fact that Cyrano loves Roxane so much that he is able to put aside his feelings and focus only on hers is so selfless and outstanding.

  37. I don't think that Christian and Cyrano's plan will work out. What will happen when Cyrano isn't there to help Christian speak? We found out in Act 2 that Christian can barely say that he loves Roxanne without getting tongue tied!

  38. I believe that Christian is an idealist because his thoughts of him soothing Roxanne with his words when that as in an idealogical belief and the real practical belief is that Cyrano is the one doing all the soothing of Roxanne. I think Cyran's kind of love means much than Christians. I think this because Cyrano gives his all emotionally to a girl that does not love him, opposed to Christian who only loves Roxanne for her beauty. In fact i think this false filling is actually there lust for each other. Cyrano in my mind is the one Roxanne should pick?

  39. i cant wait for act four. The suspense between Cyrano/Christian and Roxanne is getting dirty and bloody, literally. The battle between the attacking forces against tne Gascons is going to be great. The battle (hopefully) will be the best part. Swords and muskets going off, orders being thrown into the air, that is what makes a book/movie great and understandable.

  40. I think that the agreement that Cyrano and Christian came to is a really bad one. They are just going to end up getting hurt because Roxane will be in love with Christian, not Cyrano, but once she realizes that Christian is not who he says he is, she will not love him anymore either.

  41. I feel that the agreement between Cyrano and Christian isn’t realistic. This is because there are many ways that this agreement could be unsuccessful. The first reason would be that Roxane might find out. Second, she falls in love with Christian's expression for Roxane, which is in fact Cyrano’s, and not his charming looks. Third, Christian isn't always going to have Cyrano there to speak for him. Therefore in many ways this plan isn’t practical.
